Assistant Principal

Mr. DeMaio

Please note, Mr. DeMaio will serve students and families at Staunton River Middle School for the 2020-2021 school year. The following letter is one he wrote for the 2019-2020 school year and it will be updated when he returns for the 2021-2022 school year. We are grateful that he will continue to meet the needs of our Grizzly friends at the middle school.

Dear Goodview Family,

I am beyond excited to be going into my 3rd year as your assistant principal, and cannot wait to get the 2019-2020 school year underway. I want to share with you a few beliefs I have about our school. I believe learners should be excited about school. Along with our learners being excited about school, our teachers also need to be enthused about school. We need to ensure we are doing fun, engaging activities that involve hands-on teaching and learning. Our learners need to be active, working together, not just sitting and listening. For our staff members, I want to make sure they're having fun also. At meetings ensuring they are moving and interacting with one another. We have to remember, whoever is doing the talking, is doing the learning. We have to make sure our learners are having good dialogue as well as our teachers.

We make sure all staff, including myself, show up every day for your kids. We make sure we know the standards and best practices, and we put them in place. Everything we do together is team-oriented. We collaborate, communicate, and reflect together so we can continue to improve our practices. Same thing with our learners. We provide them opportunities to work in cooperative learning groups, which are highly engaging and foster a sense of community because when students feel safe they can focus on learning. I believe we should also celebrate learner success. We do this in many ways, but just a couple of ways we are doing this is through our daily staff shoutouts on the announcements, weekly Goodview Grizzly prize winners, and Good News Call Of The Day highlighting learners doing something positive within the school.

Our teachers and learners need to be the best version of themselves every day, as do I. Learners will see me very active, greeting and high fiving them off the bus in the morning, in the hallways, and in the classrooms. I place a large emphasis on being visible in the school, getting into classrooms each day to observe and interact with the teachers and learners.

Parents, please be involved as much as you can. Help us create and be apart of our school story. Be in school volunteering in classrooms, eating breakfast and lunch with your child, and attending PTA/school events. Please follow our Facebook Page (@GoodviewElementary) and Twitter Page (@goodview_bcps) to stay up-to-date on all the wonderful things our teachers and learners are doing each day.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to call the school, or email me at My job, your job, and our teachers' job is to make our learners 100% successful each and every day in school.
