The staff and faculty of GES are aware of the self-esteem and wellbeing of all students. As stakeholders who supervise and teach children, a responsibility to maintain a safe environment through practices and policies is embraced. Respect of others is modeled by the adults in the school. In the lower levels, emphasis is place on respect of self and of others. Problem-solving techniques are observed and heard throughout the lower grade levels. Conflict resolution continues in the upper levels with more specific lessons and guidance.
GES is pleased with the present policies and practices concerning bullying in our school. The prevention is viewed as educational with students, parents, and faculty. Any person would be affirmed to take advantage of any specialized instruction that focused on empowering the victim and the bystanders. Learning to be confident and assertive is viewed as a positive necessary life skill and an effective way to deal with aggression of others in our lives. Positive self- esteem is most valuable when intrinsic and therefore the learning is seen as a path to be managed rather than a one day lesson to be taught. Learning how, as adults, to better manage a healthy way of life for ourselves and for our children is accepted as valuable for all children.
During fourth grade classroom guidance, Peer Mediation is taught to all students. A definition of mediation, the role of mediation in the school setting, and an understanding of the mediation process is explained over a period of four weeks. Selected and willing students then receive 6-8 hours of more in-depth training after school. Peer Mediators are used during the school year to mediate conflicts between their peers.
