About me
I am a graduate of James Madison University where I received both my Bachelor's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders and my Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology. I have worked in a variety of settings including public and private schools, nursing homes, hospitals, and home health. I am certified by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) and am licensed by the Virginia Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. I am local to Bedford County and am entering my 14th year in this school division.

What is a Speech-Language Pathologist?
As a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), I specialize in the development of communication and its associated disorders. This includes assessment and treatment of swallowing, articulation, phonology, fluency, voice, expressive language (output), receptive language (comprehension), and pragmatic language (social skills).

What if you think your child needs services?

Screening - The first step is to have your child screened. Often, the difficulties children experience are within developmental expectations and do not require intervention.  A screening can be done in a short amount of time and can provide information as to whether your child is on target or needs further assessment.

Evaluation - An evaluation provides more in-depth and detailed information. It may contain a combination of standardized assessments, formal and informal measures, analysis of written and/or spoken language samples, observation, teacher input (if applicable), parent input, and more to evaluate the area(s) of concern.

If you are concerned about your toddler or preschooler's speech-language development, please contact Cathy Bolen, preschool coordinator, at (434) 525-3700 to initiate the screening process.

For concerns about your school-aged child, you can reach me at (540) 892-5674.
