School Counseling

A Note from Olivia Frary our New Guindance Counselor:

I am thrilled to be joining the GES staff this year as school counselor! I can already tell that Goodview is a special place full of love and passion for students’ educational and overall wellbeing; which is why I can’t wait to get started. I have four years’ experience working in education, all of which have been at Title 1 schools. I chose Goodview as my VA home because the administration and staff believe the same thing I do: our work is not just a job.

My counseling practice is focused on whole-student development and helping students see the gifts and value they bring to our community (and beyond!). I can’t imagine a better way to spend my time than helping your students reach their potential. It is my goal to partner with you this school year in making it the happiest, healthiest, and most successful year yet. I look forward to getting to know you all of you more and please call/email me any time.

Components of the guidance & counseling program include:

1.  Classroom Guidance:
Classroom guidance is provided for all students and is based on the counseling curriculum and school needs. Its purpose is to educate and help students develop skills.

 2.   Individual Counseling:
Referrals for individual counseling may come from students, parents/guardians, teachers, and administrators. If counseling is required over an extended period of time or a crisis presents itself, parents/guardians will be notified. All services are confidential.

 3.   Small Groups:
Small groups will be offered on various topics throughout the school year, and participation is only permitted with parental/guardian permission. Topics will be based on student needs as the year progresses. Topics could include social skills, study skills, grief/loss, divorce, etc.

 4.  Coordination:
Hopefully as the counseling program steadily grows each year, the involvement in programs that are a benefit to our students, school, and community will grow as well. The support and participation of parents/guardians and teachers is of high value and importance. Programs include: Character Counts, conflict mediation, and more.

 5.  Consultation:
Consultation involves working with a variety of people in the student’s world who could offer assistance and resources to help us best serve the student. People may include parents, teachers, administrators, and persons in outside agencies. Referrals and outside resources help in the overall successes of the counseling program and our students.
